Jeanne is now walking around the house without the walker. She uses the walker if she wants to walk a little faster. She has had a few outings, though with the virus there are not a lot of places that she can go. She had to wear a heart monitor for 2 weeks to check for afib. She returned the monitor this week. She will talk to the doctor to see if she still needs to be still on the afib medication. Now if the numbness would just go away.

April 25, Saturday
Jeanne continues to gain strength. Going up and down stair is one of her main exercises. She can manage walking in the kitchen without her walker. She even managed to make oatmeal for breakfast one morning. She can get things out of the refrigerator and get them to the counter. She is constantly gaining strength, so this helps her to not get too depressed about the continued numbness in her hands and feet. She is getting more stinging and pains in her hands and feel which is very irritating but it is supposed to be a good sign. These pains are worst in the morning.
Ely, so far, has remained virus-free. But once tourist season starts and things start opening up they are afraid that this may change.

April 16, Thursday HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
Happy Birthday, Jeanne!!
No big party this year, since the Covid 19 business. But Jay did make her their traditional birthday cake. She had lost about 15 pounds in the hospital but with Jay's good cooking she is gaining it back.
Jeanne continues to gain strength and balance. She can take a few steps without the walker. So her balance is getting better. She can do the stairs now with alternating feet and not gripping the railing with both hands. That is a big deal. Her hands and feet are still numb but she is starting to get tingling and some shooting pains which she has been told is a good thing. It is a sign that the feeling is beginning to come back.
She has returned to working on her jigsaw puzzles. That is good therapy for her fine motor skills.

Friday, April 10
Jeanne is adjusting to home life. It is a process figuring out what she can do and what she needs help with. She can walk with the walker safely all over. But now they have 3 walkers, one for each level, so that she does not have to bring the walker with her when she goes upstairs. The living area is downstairs but the kitchen and dining areas are upstairs. She figures that doing the stairs is part of her therapy.
She had her first PT-OT session at the Ely rehab hospital. She showed them the exercises she was given from Duluth and they felt that she could continue with the program on her own. She knows that she is only a phone call away if she has questions. Many of her exercises she is still not able to do so it is something to work towards.
She is glad to be home. Certainly, Jay's cooking is way better than what she had been having in Duluth. Jay has been doing what 7 nurses, 3 assistant nurses, cook, dishwasher and maintence person did for Jeanne while she was at the rehab clinic. I added that he was also assisting with PT-OT. It is a lot but he is happy to do it and he is appreciated. Go Jay!!
Kris, Sharon, Jeanne and I have started a regular Zoom Chat session. That is nice. It is a good way to connect.
I think everyone seems to have settled in to this social distancing routine. Schools are officially all on-line learning until then end of the school year.

Discharge Date!! Woohoo!!
After having PT and OT and doing training with Jay. Jeanne was ready for discharge. First stop - McDonad"s!!
Later in the day.
Jeanne got home ok. She made it up the big flight of stairs with only 1 rest break. She was relaxing in the recliner, while Jay unpacked the car. Now comes the challenge of figuring what she can do or what Jay will need to do.
She has her therapy scheduled to start on Thursday in Ely. Part of the therapy will be going down the stairs and walking in to the therapy department with her walker. After all of that I hope that she will not be too exhausted to do her therapy.

Sunday, April 5
Jeanne has officially moved into the little apartment connected to the rehab facility. Jay will arrive later this afternoon. Tomorrow will be spent teaching Jay everything he needs to know about helping Jeanne. She still is not safe to walk alone with the walker but she just needs someone to be hanging on just in case she falls. She is able to stand for longer periods. Her hands and feet are still numb but she is starting to get sensation of pain in her hands and feet. So the feeling is slowly returning. In Occupational Therapy she had to make her own grilled cheese sandwich. Getting things out of the refrigerator, opening things, using the stove. It was quite a challenge but she did it. Luckily, Jay will be doing most of the cooking at home.
One nice thing is that she is getting more virtual chatting these days. People are desperate to connect. Her phone works great for this.
Happy Holy Week. It is hard to believe that it is Palm Sunday. George and I have started using a bandanna like a bandit for when we go to the grocery store. Everyone is keeping their distance. Who knows how long this will go on.

Thursday, April 2
I had a nice Zoom chat with Jeanne last night. She is excited about going home next week. This rehab place is very organized. They have a small apartment attached to the rehab place. So Sunday night Jay will check in to the apartment. Monday, Jeanne will move in with him and they will spend the day training Jay on how to care for Jeanne. Then on Tuesday, Jay will check Jeanne out and take her home. She has been working hard on the stairs all week. That is one big hurdle. She has a full flight of stairs at home just to get into the house. Once in the house there are other stairs but she does not have to do them. Jay can cook meals upstairs and bring the food down to her level. Their bedroom, bathroom and family room are all on one level. But my guess is that she will use stair climbing as a daily exercise.
She continues to gain strength and the feeling is very slowly coming back. Still very numb hands and feet.
They are trying to set up a therapy schedule in Ely, for when she goes home. Jay has been trying to get bars in place in the bathroom. But that has been a big challenge. She has a walker already. She doesn't think that she will need a wheel chair. If she does her church has one that she can borrow.
